BULLDOGS' WIN STREAK ENDS IN SHUTOUT LOSS TO NORTHERN KENTUCKY
|Holly Bruntjens accounted for one of Ferris State's two hits in its first setback of the 2009 season.
The season-opening nine-game winning streak for the nationally seventh-ranked Ferris State softball team came to an end in Thursday's (March 12) second game as the Bulldogs were limited to two hits in a 5-0 loss to Northern Kentucky at the Florida Rebel Spring Tournament in Kissimmee, Fla.
The Bulldogs' initial setback of the 2009 season came as a result of outstanding pitching by NKU's Chelsie Roy and effective hitting by the Norse batters. Three FSU errors also plagued in team in its quest to remain undefeated this spring.
The contest began with both teams unable to score in the first three innings before Northern Kentucky would tally three runs on as many hits and three FSU errors in the top of the fourth inning. The Norse (10-6 overall) would increase their margin to five runs in the top of ensuing frame with three hits, highlighted by a two-run homer from Ashley Gates.
NKU pitcher Chelsie Roy was in command throughout the game as she gave up just two hits and fanned eight Bulldog hitters, including six looking.
Senior pitcher Holly Bruntjens (Gladstone) broke up Roy's no-hit bid in the bottom of the second with a one-out single and sophomore outfielder Rachel Wade (Canton) accounted for FSU's other hit in the fifth frame on a single.
Bruntjens (3-1) gave up six hits, five runs (three earned) and struck out four in four-plus innings as the starter. Senior Shannon Roney (Wheaton, Ill./Glen Ellyn Glenbard South) pitched two and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief and notched two strikeouts.
The win by Northern Kentucky avenged Ferris State's 5-2 season-opening triumph over the Norse on Saturday (March 7).
