A pair of Ferris State University women's soccer players, sophomore goalkeeper Becci Houdek (Canton) and senior defender Jackie Back (Ortonville/Ortonville-Brandon), have been named to the 2008 All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Second Team as released Friday (Nov. 7) by the GLIAC office.
Both Houdek and Back were among 12 individuals to receive second-team all-conference recognition while 11 others were chosen as first-team selections in balloting conducted by the conference's nine member head coaches.
For the second straight season, Grand Valley State's Katy Tafler was recognized for the third consecutive season as the GLIAC's Offensive Player of the Year while her teammate Natalja Stanski earned GLIAC Defensive Player of the Year honors. Tiffin's Shelly Rogers was tabbed as the conference's freshman of the year and GVSU head coach Dave DiIanni was the GLIAC Coach of the Year Award recipient for the second straight season.

A first-year FSU's women's soccer team member, Houdek compiled a 9-8-1 record with a 1.61 goals-against average (29 goals allowed) and an .842 save percentage (155 saves) in 18 matches. A starter in 15 contests, Houdek registered five shutouts this season - vs. Southern Indiana (8/29) at the Grand Valley State Tournament, at Northern Michigan (9/21), vs. Northern Michigan (10/12 and 11/4), and at Northwood (10/26). The 5-9 goalkeeper totaled double figures in saves on seven occasions this campaign, which included a season-high 20 stops at Grand Valley State (11/1) in the regular-season finale.
Houdek currently ranks fourth among the program's all-time goalkeepers in goals-against average (1.61), victories (nine), and shutouts (four) while being listed seventh in save percentage (.842). In all-time FSU single-season leaders, Houdek's nine wins this campaign ties a school record while her 155-saves total is second most on the charts. Houdek's 8.61 saves per match represents the second-highest average while the Bulldog keeper's 1.61 goals-against average is 10th best on the list. Houdek is also a member of the Ferris State women's basketball team.
For Back, the all-conference honor represents the second straight season in which she has garnered second-team laurels. A 2008 FSU co-captain, Back started all 17 matches played in this campaign and finished fourth among the team's leaders with 1,433 minutes played. The 5-2 Bulldog defender finished this season with two shots on goal while providing leadership to the squad.
A 2007 All-GLIAC Second-Team honoree and GLIAC All-Academic Team member, Back was the chosen as Ferris' Defensive Player of the Year last season.
Back concludes her four-year (2005-08) career at FSU with one goal and four assists for six points in 72 matches. She totaled seven shots on goal in her career and finishes with a .500 shots on goal percentage. Back owns the distinction of being Ferris State's all-time leader in minutes played with a 5,379 career total.
Ferris State, under third-year head coach Neathan Gibson, wrapped up the 2008 season with a 9-9-1 overall record and a fourth-place tying 8-7-1 GLIAC mark. The Bulldogs earned a berth in the GLIAC Women's Soccer Tournament for the second year in a row this fall and advanced to the semifinal round before suffering a 3-0 season-ending loss at nationally number-one ranked Grand Valley State (11/7).
