FERRIS STATE PLACES NINTH IN FINAL FALL TOURNAMENT

The Ferris State men's golf team concluded its fall season Tuesday (Oct. 28) with a ninth-place showing at the 2008 Rollins College Invitational in Ocoee, Fla.
The Bulldogs registered a three-round 885 team stroke total on the par 72, 7,038-yard Forest Lake Golf Club course to finish with a 21-over-par score. FSU carded 297 and 287 scores in the opening two rounds Monday (Oct. 27) before wrapping up tournament play with a final-round 301-stroke total on Tuesday (Oct. 28).
Columbus State (Ga.) captured top honors among the 16 participants with a first-place 862 score (-2) while Lynn (Fla.) was runner up at 871 (+7). Ferris State ended up five strokes in back of eighth-place Barry (Fla.), which turned in a 16-over-par 880 score.
Senior Kelbi Lee (Billings, Mont.) was the Bulldogs' top individual golfer with a second-place 208-stroke total (71-68-69=208, -8). He finished four strokes behind individual medalist J.P. van der Walt of Columbus State, who carded a 12-under-par 204. Junior Kurt Valley (Bay City/Western) and senior Derek Shelburne (Scotts/Vicksburg) were among five individuals to gain a share of 47th place with 225 scores. Valley (75-74-76=225) and Shelburne (77-71-77=225) concluded the tourney nine strokes over par.
Sophomore Joe Brown's (St. Ignace/LaSalle) 228 score (74-75-79=228, +12) proved worthy of a 59th-place performance. Junior Eric Lilleboe (Okemos/Lansing Catholic Central) withdrew from final-round competition after firing rounds of 81 and 74, respectively.
Ferris State will return to the links in 2009 as the Bulldogs are scheduled to take part in the Ashland Invitational, March 28-29, in Ashland, Ohio.
