VOLLEYBALL WINNING STREAK ENDS WITH LOSS TO 17TH-RANKED LEWIS
For the first time in its last nine matches, the Ferris State women's volleyball team suffered defeat as the Bulldogs were dealt a 3-1 loss (25-21, 21-25, 17-25, 29-31) by nationally 17th-ranked Lewis Saturday (Oct. 18) at the 2008 Asics GLVC/GLIAC Crossover Volleyball Tournament in Indianapolis, Ind.
Ferris State ends the two-day tournament with a 2-1 mark as the Bulldogs are now 15-8 overall on the 2008 campaign. Prior to the match, Ferris had won eight consecutive matches dating back to Sept. 26 with a 3-0 conference win at Lake Superior State.
The Bulldogs, who hit .138 for the match with 44 team kills, were led by junior outside hitter Katie Edwards (Cedar Springs) and sophomore middle hitter Arielle Goodson (Grand Rapids/Central). Edwards and Goodson paced Ferris State with a match-high 13 kills.
Senior setters Andrea Rich (New Baltimore/Anchor Bay) and Candice Marut (Pinconning) took turns directing the FSU offense as Rich totaled 18 assists and Marut posted 15 helpers.
Rich spearheaded the defensive effort with a team-best 15 digs, which was one more than redshirt freshman libero Lisa Tobiczyk (Marysville) recorded. Freshman outside hitter Ashley Huntey (Stanwood/Morley-Stanwood) also notched double figures in digs with 12.
At the nets, Ferris State compiled seven team blocks with junior outside hitter Amanda Kettlewell (Marysville) racking up two block solos.
The Flyers concluded the four-set match with a .178 attack percentage on 59 kills in 157 attempts. Lewis also tallied nine team blocks.
