VOLLEYBALL INKS ALYSSA BRECHT TO COMPLETE EARLY-SIGNING CLASS
Ferris State Picks Up Another Michigan High School All-Stater
The Ferris State University women's volleyball program has added another talented individual from the prep ranks with the signing of Alyssa "Aly" Brecht (Elwell/Alma) to a national letter of intent. The announcement was made by FSU head coach Tia Brandel-Wilhelm.
A 5-10 outside hitter, Brecht earned second-team all-state plaudits and was a repeat (2006-07 and 2007) first-team all-region pick as a senior this fall at Alma (Mich.) High School. The 2007 All-Tri Valley Central Conference First-Team selection helped AHS under head coach Steve Humm capture a district title and win a regional championship for the first time in school history.
"Aly is tremendous athlete and a true Bulldog," said Brandel-Wihelm, who finished her 12th year at Ferris State this 2007 campaign. "Aly will give us experienced depth at both the outside and right-side positions. She is a healthy competitor and we look forward to her being a part of the Ferris State program."
Brecht, who was named to the Saginaw News' 2007 Dream Team, set a school single-season record with 722 kills in the 2007 campaign as the 2007 team captain received team Most Valuable Player Award recognition for the second straight season and was honored as the Channel 6 News Player of the Week. She averaged 4.4 kills per game while compiling 88 service aces, 463 digs, 33 block solos, and 56 block assists in 166 total games during her senior season.
In her junior campaign, Brecht garnered both honorable mention all-state and first-team all-conference accolades as Alma claimed a district championship crown. Along with those individual honors, Brecht landed a spot on the Lansing State Journal and The Morning Sun Dream Teams. She wrapped up the 2006 campaign with 509 kills in 1,281 attempts to go with three block solos, 35 block assists, and 252 digs in 154 games.
Besides volleyball, Brecht has competed on the school's track and field team the last three season (2005-07). She also served in 2006 on the Youth Advisory Council and as Class Board Treasurer in 2007.
In club volleyball, Brecht competed for Runbird USA under head coach Rob Buck.
The daughter of Jeff and Sheri Brecht of Elwell, Mich., Aly is undecided about her academic major at Ferris State.
Brecht joins Samantha Fordyce (DeWitt), Mallory Kopa (Marysville), Ashley Huntey (Stanwood/Morley-Stanwood), Karen Thompson (Holt), and Anne Sutton (Grand Rapids/Northview) as current members of the 2008 Bulldog women's volleyball recruiting class.
