FSU Hockey At A Glance: The Ferris State University men’s ice hockey team will seek to extend its current winning streak this weekend (Nov. 9-10) as the Bulldogs host the Bowling Green State University Falcons in a two-game Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) series at Big Rapids, Mich. The puck drops for this Friday's (Nov. 9) series opener at 7:05 p.m. (EST) while Saturday's (Nov. 10) contest will start at 5:05 p.m. (EST) with both league games being held at FSU's Ewigleben Ice Arena.
2007-08 Ferris State Hockey Ticket Information: Tickets for all 2007-08 Bulldog home hockey games can be purchased by contacting the FSU Athletics Ticket Office at (231) 591-2888. The FSU Athletics Ticket Office's normal hours of operation are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (ET) weekdays. The Records: Ferris State improved to 4-3-1 overall and 3-1-0 in the CCHA with a pair of league victories against Ohio State last weekend (Nov. 2 & 4) at OSU’s Value City Arena in Columbus, Ohio. The Bulldogs skated to a 4-0 win over the Buckeyes in last Friday's (Nov. 2) matchup and then notched a 4-2 victory in a Sunday (Nov. 4) matinee contest to extend their current winning streak to three games. FSU, which is 2-1-1 at home this season, is among those teams receiving votes in this week’s USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine, U.S. College Hockey Online/CSTV, and Inside College Hockey.com polls. Ferris State compiled a 14-22-3 overall record for the 2006-07 campaign, which included a ninth place 10-16-2 CCHA mark. The Bulldogs were 9-8-1 in home contests a season ago.
Bowling Green State is 3-2-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the CCHA to date after recording a league home-and-home series sweep of Western Michigan last weekend (11/2-3). The Falcons skated to a 3-2 overtime win over the Broncos last Friday (11/2) at WMU’s Lawson Ice Arena in Kalamazoo, Mich. BGSU then registered a 5-4 overtime decision in last Saturday’s (11/3) rematch at the BGSU Ice Arena in Bowling Green, Ohio. The Falcons, who have won three of their last four outings, are 1-1-0 at home and 2-1-0 on the road this season. A season ago, Bowling Green State went 7-29-2 overall with a 12th-place 5-22-1 CCHA mark.
The Series: Bowling Green State maintains a 48-41-11 lead over Ferris State in an all-time series which started in the 1978-79 season. The Bulldogs are 11-1-2 (.821) in the last 14 meetings against the Falcons and are midst a four-game series winning streak after sweeping BGSU at home last season (2/16-17) by scores of 2-1 and 5-2. Ferris State has compiled a 23-18-6 home mark and is 8-1-2 (.778) in its last 11 home appearances against the Falcons. Nine of the last 10 encounters between the two teams have been decided by two goals or less with Ferris producing a 6-1-2 mark (.722) in those contests. The Bulldogs sport a 5-6-2 record in November outings against the Falcons and are 1-3-2 all-time at home during this month.
The Coaches: Ferris State – Bob Daniels (Michigan State, 1982), 16th season, 243-289-52 (.461) – (22-15-6 vs. Bowling Green State). Daniels has the distinction of being the all-time winningest coach in Ferris State history. He was honored as the 2002-03 CCHA Coach of the Year and the Inside College Hockey (INCH) Coach of the Year, but the crowning highlight of his coaching career was being chosen as the recipient of the 2003 Spencer Penrose Award as the ACHA's Division I National Hockey Coach of the Year.
Bowling Green State – Scott Paluch (Bowling Green State, 1991), 6th season, 58-113-20 (.356) – (1-9-2 vs. Ferris State). Paluch earned 1987-88 All-America and All-CCHA First-Team honors as a senior at BGSU. He served as an associate head coach at Boston College from 1995-02 prior to becoming the fifth coach in the program’s history.
30th Anniversary – The 2007-08 season represents the 30th anniversary for the Ferris State men’s ice hockey program competing at the NCAA Division I level. The Bulldogs registered a 10-24-0 overall record in the 1978-79 season which marked their NCAA Division I debut.
2007-08 CCHA Preseason Polls: Ferris State was selected to finish ninth with 44 points in the 2007-08 CCHA Coaches Poll while the Bulldogs were tabbed eighth by the media (279 points), which was announced Sept. 25, 2007 during the CCHA's annual media day event at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Mich. Miami (114 points) was selected as the favorite in the coaches poll while 2996-07 NCAA Division I National Champion Michigan State (701 points) claimed top honors in the media balloting. A total of 63 media members ranked the 12 CCHA teams in projected order of finish for the regular season. League coaches ranked the CCHA teams, excluding their own school. This weekend's opponent, Bowling Green State was forecasted to finish in 12th place by both the coaches and the media.

2007-08 CCHA Cluster – Under the CCHA's "rivalry pairing" cluster scheduling format, Ferris State is grouped annually with rivalry partner Western Michigan. The two teams will join Bowling Green State and Notre Dame for the 2007-08 campaign to form one four-team cluster as each team will square off against one another four times during this regular season.
Goalie Helpers – Freshman goaltender Pat Nagle (Bloomfield) and junior netminder Mitch O’Keefe (Almonte, Ontario) were both credited with an assist in last weekend’s (11/2 & 4) series at Ohio State. Nagle assisted on the Bulldogs’ second-period game winning goal in a 4-0 win last Friday (11/2) and then O’Keefe picked up an assist on a second-period power play tally in Sunday’s (11/4) 4-2 victory. Prior to their accomplishments, the last FSU netminder to garner an assist was Mike Brown at Ohio State (3/13/05) in a 5-4 overtime setback in the CCHA Tournament’s First Round.
Making His Case – Sophomore defenseman Matt Case (Plymouth, Minn.) not only leads Ferris State in scoring to date with six points (1-5=6) in seven games this season, but is four away from matching his 10 points total (4-6=10) in 29 contests a season ago. Case has notched at least a point in four of his last five outings which includes a pair of two-point game performances – vs. Wayne State (10/19) and Notre Dame (10/27).
Do You Recall? – Senior left wing Adam Miller (Livonia) netted his first collegiate hat trick last season (2/17) against Bowling Green State with a three-goal output in the Bulldogs’ 5-2 home win. Miller produced the game’s first lamplighter with 1:49 left in the first period and then tacked on two more goals in third period with a power-play tally to go with an empty netter.
Now In The Top 10 – Mitch O’Keefe cracked the top 10 on FSU’s all-time goaltending saves leaders list with 30 saves in last Sunday’s (11/4) triumph at Ohio State. O’Keefe, who has accumulated 1,571 career saves in 65 career appearances, is now six stops shy of moving into a tie for ninth place with Ted Ykema (1978-82; 1,577 career saves). The 2005-06 FSU Rookie of the Year is 95 saves away from tying for eighth-place honors with current Miami (Ohio) assistant coach Jeff Blashill (1994-98; 1,666 career saves).
Favorable First Impression – Freshman center Justin Menke (Shamrock, Saskatchewan) has started his collegiate career off in productive style with four points (3-1=4) in the team’s initial eight outings this season. Menke is midst a three-game point streak (2-1=3), which includes an assist in last Friday’s (11/2) game at Ohio State followed by a power-play lamplighter in Sunday’s (11/4) series finale. Menke posted a team-high 64 points (24-40=64) in 58 games last season for the Yorkton (Saskatchewan) Terriers of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL).
Defensive Stalwarts – Ferris State has held its opponent to 15 goals (1.88 avg.) this season in its initial eight contests after allowing 25 lamplighters (3.13) in the 2006-07 squad’s first eight encounters. FSU has compiled a 1.86 goals-against average to date this campaign compared to a 3.12 goals-against average the previous season. The Bulldogs are 4-3-1 this season after going 3-5-0 in their first eight games a season ago.
Productive Start – Junior right wing Justin Lewandowski’s (Naperville, Ill.) two goals this season in seven games already matches his career single-season high of two (2-2=4) set in 25 contests for the 2005-06 campaign. He generated five points (1-4=5) in 17 games last season.
Exclusive ‘C’ Club – Senior defenseman Adam Welch (Hastings, Minn.) is presently serving as Ferris State’s team captain this 2007-08 campaign for the third consecutive season. In doing so, Welch holds the distinction of being only the fourth Bulldog skater in the program’s history to serve in that capacity for more than two seasons. He’s also the community involvement chairperson for FSU’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and has been a co-recipient of the Bulldog hockey program’s Blue Line Competitive Award the last two seasons (2005-06 and 2006-07).
