VAN CULIN VYING FOR FROZEN FOUR SKILLS CHALLENGE INVITATION
Fans Can Vote For The Ferris State Skater Through Feb. 12

Senior defenseman Joe Van Culin (Monticello, Minn.) of the 2006-07 Ferris State University men's ice hockey team has been selected as a finalist for the Pontiac Frozen Four Skills Challenge, which will be held as part of the 2007 NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Frozen Four on Friday, April 6, at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Mo.
Van Culin was one of 89 current ice hockey student-athletes to be named a finalist by the selection committee. Fan voting will be used to help the selection committee determine the final combined 32 senior male and female players (16 male and 16 female) to participate in the East Team versus West Team skills challenge event. Ferris State hockey votes can do their part by voting online at www.ncaasports.com or through the link on the Bulldog hockey homepage at www.ferris.edu/Sports/Hockey through Feb. 12. The West Team will consist of school representatives from the Central Collegiate Hockey Asssociation (CCHA), the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA), and College Hockey America (CHA) along with three NCAA Division III conferences -- the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC), the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association (MCHA), and the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA).
Participants in this years' challenge are presently in their senior year of eligibility. The skills challenge event will feature puck control relay, fastest skater, hardest shot, accuracy shooting, rapid fire shooting and penalty shot competition.
In 28 games this season, Van Culin has recorded nine points with four goals and five assists. The 2004-05 Ferris State CCHA Scholar-Athlete has accumulated 29 career points on nine goals with 20 assists in 123 appearances to date.
The Pontiac Frozen Four Skills Challenge is part of "Friday Night At The Frozen Four" activites which also inclues the presentation of the Hobey Baker Memorial Award and the Hockey Humanitarian Award. Former Ferris State goaltender Tom Mueller competed in the inaugural Frozen Four Skills Challenge last season at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee, Wis., after initially being selected as a West Team alternate.
